![]() If they do not have the website owners permission to copy a full website and have all files and content locally/on their machine then they are stealing. If a person wishes to download someone elses website with such programs, they should contact the site owner regarding this asking for permission to do so. Take a photographers site for instance, you wouldn't want someone to come and download all your website content to include photo's would you? No. That provided material is not your to download locally regardless if your intentions are meant no harm. If you/they are downloading a full website and saving it locally to view offline later, then their breaking the law. That's why we have "Copyright" in the footer because it's protected materiel that is on YOUR website that is owned by - You/Your friends have zero right to download copy righted material that is not owned by them. YOU have every right to do as you wish with your content but you wouldn't want someone else to steal your website content would you with such said program? No. ![]() We're talking about software programs that copy/download website content without the website owners knowing and/or kpmedia - Those are your own websites that are owned by you. If a client requests to lift this restriction, we'll be glad to do it for them but that's only at the clients Carlos - We're not talking about "Cached browser content" here. We have no intentions to ban people that do not have a malicious intent but the fact remains this program and several others like it should not be used on anyone's website but their own. We found a solution that only bans this program and several others like it that works. We have an obligation to protect our clients data at all cost. They had no right to download our clients site to whatever machine it was going to and causing an extreme load in doing so. The intent this individual had was malicious. ![]() Scrapers like this hit the site with hundreds or thousands of requests a minute which is reason enough to block these tools. Performance - Your browser does not cache the entire site at once, it uses only what it needs to pull down the specific page you are on (and maybe a bit more). The concept is similar to recording a TV show - recording it for personal use such as watching it as a later date is technically theft - but a understood form of theft that is permitted under "Fair use" if you take that same recording and place it on a video sharing site, it then goes into the "unauthorized" area. These tools are more often then not used to harvest content to make unauthorized derivatives. Archival is technically theft - but a understood form of theft. Intent - Yes, your browser does cache website content locally but tools like this are more commonly used for theft of content. I'm sure others would like to know that may want to do this as well so as a community forum, please share your thoughts.Įvery browser is downloading and saving files, that's how it works.īTW, I just checked out your site, am I a thief now? I think the problem comes down to two things But please, do share your opinions regarding the Gist above since you seem to think it will cause problems using it. We didn't use the Gist above, I said we used a "form" of it. How many times have you seen a post arise that said something like: "This person stole my site!!" I have! Many of them, so if there is a way to prevent this from happening again on any of our clients sites along with implementing tighter CSF Portflooding and connection settings, we'll do it, because that's our job to make sure our clients sites/files/data is safe. So, what your basically telling me is, you would just brush it off and say "oh well" let them steal my content - no biggie. Would you want a host to be pro-active with implementing security measures to prevent this kind of situation again? Yes, I'm sure you would. Would you like it if someone ran this program on your site and downloaded your entire site? No, you wouldn't. Maybe other web hosts should be as pro-activate as we are? I don't think we are going to the extreme with this. luckily, we were able to catch it in time and block it. we have zero tolerants for this kind of behavior/action. This program caused an extreme load on our clients VPS and not to mention - it's stealing and we wont tolerate it. However, again, it's our job to protect our clients data at all costs. That's your opinion and your entitled to that. You'll have problems using it.That's fine, you can think that. What's next? Web browsers because the plugins allow downloading? Sometimes web hosts are too heavy-handed, and this is a perfect example. You're blaming a program for the actions of 1 person.
